Onsite paediatric training from Dr. Cordonnier at IONA
In CBM Luxembourg’s long-standing partnership with IONA, Luanda, one of our four core areas of focus is “financing the stay of external trainers at IONA” as well as providing support for capacity building. Developing local expertise is a fundamental part of CBM Luxembourg’s approach to helping Angola to become more independent in eye health care.
With this in mind, CBM Luxembourg sent Dr. Monique Cordonnier, ophthalmologist trained in Belgium, to IONA for one week of onsite clinical instruction in paediatric ophthalmology.

While onsite, Dr. Cordonnier worked closely with IONA interns, introducing them to a range of paediatric ophthalmology techniques. She spent time mentoring resident doctors on clinical diagnostics and treatment of emergencies. In the operating theatre, Dr. Cordonnier guided the doctors through surgical procedures, reviewing their techniques and consulting on complex cases. The team also benefited from her expertise in strabismus, congenital cataract and refraction problems.
Dr. Cordonnier was welcomed by IONA and the Ministry of Health in Angola. Her contribution was highly appreciated and she continues to engage with the IONA residents through online teaching sessions.
